About MKmetric

MKmetric was founded in 1993 by Dr. Benedikt N. Mandel who directs the firm's specialist staff in transport planning and modelling. The firm is linked to several universities to ensure a high quality standard in research. Most of the employees are University graduates and fully qualified in econometrics, transportation research, programming and operations research.

The company has developed an integrated scientific environment to forecast passenger transport demand. The system consists of procedures for trip generation-distribution, modal choice and assignment. This multi-modal approach allows in addition to estimate the intra- and inter-modal impact of infrastructure modifications or transport policies. All models are based on data of maximal variety (i.e. home surveys, passenger interviews, county level (NUTS 3) data). MKmetric has published all its methods and approaches to ensure scientific transparency and to allow for a critical review of the research undertaken.

Besides dealing with the problem of captivities the modelling techniques used by MKmetric take into consideration the non-linearity in human behaviour, so the reaction of passengers to changes in the 'level of service' can be evaluated much more precisely than in classic linear models. This allows in particular the detection of 'thresholds' concerning certain transport policies.

The models and algorithms have been used in several projects i.e. for the Ministry of Transport, Germany, the European Commission as well as private transport companies (rail, road, air and telecommunication). These multi-modal studies aimed at forecasting high speed rail demand or quantifying new airport location options. Air travel demand and route choice studies have also been completed using these procedures. One of the standard approaches offered is starting with a market analyses, sampling and harmonising the existing data and information, calibrating the different models of the system approach, working out development ideas or strategies, definition of scenarios, applying the system approach, analysing the results and finally preparing the recommendations or taking action on the inauguration of services.

Program development and applications are carried out on computer clusters which are essential for advanced large scale transport modelling projects. All software used for the development of the system approach is based on internal programming and implementation, no out-of-shelf transport software is applied. This allows a maximum flexibility on specific client needs and a fast as well as effective adaptation of the system to the clients request is possible. In addition tailor made software applications have been developed for specific clients. Here we distinguish between simple office applications and the hard coded implementation embedded in an existing sequence of business routines.

MKmetric task in SEAPLANE

MKmetric carries out activity (3) Airport Passenger Market Potential Analysis, modelling passenger potential development at the airports included in SEAPLANE.
